FOOTBALL: OLDHAM’S Chapel Road playing fields hosted the game of the weekend in the Rochdale and District Sunday League.

North Star, entertaining Littleborough, were beaten 11-8 in a thrilling Chris Shyne Memorial Trophy quarter-final tie.

Tom Bradburn and Joe Shelmerdine both bagged quickfire braces for the visitors.

Also on the mark for Littleborough were Danny McWilliams, John Thompson, Marc Salford, Ben Fielding, Chris Pearson, Chris Ainley and J Stead.

Andy Fulham and Matt Russell both struck twice for North Star in a breathless encounter.

They were joined on the scoresheet by Steve McCann, Dominic Greenidge, Danny Taylor and Carl Taylor.

In the Newbold Tyres Premier Division, Rochdalians saw off FC Dale thanks to goals from Nathan Connor, Daniel Banks and Trevor Jepson.

Champions Copperpot were beaten 5-3 by Midland Phoenix, for whom Richard Helm notched a hat-trick and Rob Fox and Simon Riley also netted.

Physio Clinic First Division action saw Dog and Partridge beat Wardleworth 6-4.

Cardinal Villa defeated Crown & Shuttle 5-1.


Coppice suffer blow to title bid
COPPICE United ‘A’ suffered a major blow to their title aspirations after losing 2-1 to FC Carsons in the D & J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Jack Abbott Premier Division.

Matthew Hoggard and John Munson did the damage for Carsons, with Naveed Butt replying for third-placed Coppice, who find themselves three points off the top.

They have played one game more than leaders Rifle Range Reds, and will now have to rely on other results going their way.

Coppice must now concentrate on winning their remaining two fixtures and hoping for the best.

FC Royton, who occupy second spot, defeated Red Star 4-3.

On the mark for Royton were Luke Fletcher and Simon Davis, who both bagged braces.

In reply, Ryan Hobin, Mike Buckley and Mark Shaw scored for Red Star.

Basement boys Failsworth Athletic finished with a 2-0 home loss to Fitton Hill Rangers, for whom Darren Scanlon and Gareth Armstead netted.

High Crompton thumped Khartoum Northern 5-1 thanks to two goals apiece from Jack Shannon and Connor Ryan, and a James Davis effort. Paul Simpson replied for Khartoum.
