Teenager makes Moorside history
PRACTICE made perfect for teenager Jamie Taylor in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League.

The 14-year-old has spent many an hour, during winter and summer, using a stump to hit a golf ball in his mum’s back garden in Sholver.

And Jamie’s dedication paid off in no small measure when he struck a superb 146 for Moorside seconds at Droylsden.

In doing so, he became the youngest player to score a century in senior cricket for the Turf Pit Lane outfit and it was also the highest individual second-team knock in the club’s history.

Mum Stella Shirreff said: “Jamie likes his sport, and especially loves cricket.

“Ian, his dad, was at the match and was obviously chuffed to bits, but Jamie took it all in his stride.

“He’s been going to Moorside for as long as I can remember and he’s got three trophies at home — all for bowling!”

Jamie, who attends Our Lady’s School in Royton, picked up the club bowling awards at under-13s (2008 and 2009) and under-15s (2010) level.

However, he can now be classed in the role of all-rounder after this remarkable innings.

Batting at number nine 24 hours earlier, he made only four against Uppermill.

It was an altogether different story on Sunday as, opening the innings, he plundered a big ton and, alongside the vastly-experienced John Howarth (104 not out), laid the foundations for victory.

Ray Entwistle, chairman of Moorside, said: “It was an incredible achievement by Jamie and everyone at the club is proud at what he has done.

“It helped that someone like John was there to guide him, because it takes a good amount of concentration to bat for that length of time.”

Shaw’s Drew Fullalove also had a day to remember in Division Two.

After claiming five for 23 in Uppermill’s innings of 271, he went on to score 139 to help his side to a two-wicket win.

Fullalove, who also plays for the club’s under-17s and is the younger brother of first-teamer Kane, was registering his first century in senior cricket.
