GOLF: WERNETH ‘B’ — basement boys in four of the last six seasons — got off to a dream start with an 8-0 victory over Dukinfield ‘B’ in the Oldham and District Golf League’s new East Division.
Now led by former club captain David Whittingham, the Garden Suburb club reeled off some impressive successes — none more so than that of Shaun Rattigan and Tony McNamara, who came back from four down with six to play to clinch victory on the final green.
Werneth ‘A’ captain Mark Abbott and partner Jonathan Wilde also left it late.
They won the last three holes for victory, but that proved the team’s only points in a clutch of close games which ended in a 6-2 defeat at Dukinfield ‘A’ in ‘A’ League East.
Another great comeback turned a draw into a healthy 6-2 victory for Brookdale ‘A’ over Saddleworth ‘A’ in ‘A’ League West.
Captain Garry Smith and partner Brad Keeling won the last four holes of their match to claim the points from three down.
