CRICKET: REIGNING champions Friends suffered a shock defeat at Heyside thirds in the Ashton and Oldham Cricket Alliance.

John McLoughlin’s 92 and 74 from Steve Partington put Heyside on their way to 280 for nine.

And Michael Drew claimed seven for 58 as the visitors fell 91 runs short of their target.

Europa Exiles were skittled for 62 at home to Newtonhurst, with Karl Stone taking three wickets for 28.

But the away team blew their chance of earning a victory when they were bowled out for just 57. Wicketkeeper Graham Smith took six catches in the process.

There was home comfort for Greengate, who restricted St Mary’s HC to 123 before reaching their target for the loss of five wickets.

Martin Wrigley and John Fairclough made 37 each for the hosts.

The hosts were dismissed for 130 before their opponents reached their target with five wickets to spare.

There was no joy for Failsworth Macedonia, who ended their overs on 97 for nine prior to Westleigh Meths achieving their goal for the loss of three wickets.

However, there was better news for the Failsworth outfit 24 hours later, when they beat Elton Vale in the Calverley Cup first round.

After making 182 for seven, they bowled out Vale for 154.
