CRICKET: WERNETH will aim to build on their terrific start to the Lake Garage CLL season when they entertain Unsworth at the Coppice tomorrow (1.30pm).

Andy Walker’s men began the campaign with a 10-wicket defeat at Littleborough, but morale in the camp remained high and, barring a batting collapse on a lively wicket against hot title favourites Norden last Sunday, their performances since have been exemplary.

Four wins have propelled them to fourth in the table and, with Unsworth having also started well to lie fifth, this is a match of considerable significance.

Walker, while praising all the members of his young team, has been delighted with the contributions of new professional Hasnain Abbas and overseas amateur Lewis Ashton.

“The pro has made runs, is popular with the lads and helps myself and the bowlers on the field,” he said.

“And Lewis has also done well with the bat as well as catching everything that comes to him. The ball seems to follow him around and he never drops anything!”

Royton, for whom South African Cameron Delport stands in for absent pro Luke Procter, entertain Heywood, who have signed 21-year-old Andrea Agathangelou, a Greek Cypriot who captains Lancashire seconds, as their paid man for the rest of the season.

Crompton face a tricky test at Radcliffe, while Oldham have bright prospects at struggling Ashton.

TOMORROW: Ashton v Oldham; Clifton v Rochdale; Monton and Weaste v Middleton; Norden v Littleborough; Radcliffe v Crompton; Royton v Heywood; Walsden v Milnrow; Werneth v Unsworth.
