Fair forces match off

OLDHAM’S second-team match at home to Ashton on Saturday was called off as their Pollards ground was hosting a fun fair.

The machinery rolled up last Wednesday and was in place for five days.

Sanctioned by the Oldham Sports and Community Club, of which Oldham Cricket Club is only one section, admission to the fun fair was expected to raise vital funds, possibly more than £1,000, for the organisation.

The fun fair came at a cost so far as Lake Garage CLL second XI points were concerned.

Cricket chairman Mel Whittle said: “We tried to get a fresh venue for the game and actually had an agreement to stage it at Glodwick, but when I told the league about the arrangement they ruled that the match must take place at a CLL ground so they decided to hand the points to Ashton.

“The decision to stage the fun fair was made by the Oldham Sports and Community Club rather than the cricket section, but the funds which will be coming are much needed.”
