BOWLS:

THERE is less than a week to enter this year’s Oldham Evening Chronicle Bowling Handicap.

The competition gets under way on Friday, June 3, so would-be entrants need to act now in order to beat Monday’s deadline.

Organisers have scrapped the previous limit of 64 players. This year’s competition sees heats being held at four venues on two nights, which means players will compete for one finals-night place at each green.

The venues will be Nimble Nook, Crompton, Delph and Royton on Fridays June 3 and June 10.

Entrants will be drawn at the various greens and will pick their own number from the hat.

The finals will be held at North Chadderton Social and Bowling Club on Saturday, July 9, when, for the first time, a dress code will be enforced.

Entry fee remains £5. Places can be booked by ringing organise Bob Nisbet on 681 5516.

MIDDLETON Conservative Club will stage this year’s Greater Manchester Merit.

New organiser Steve Squire has attracted 64 entries — a huge increase on previous seasons.

ENTRIES continue to be accepted for the Saddleworth Festival of Arts one-day open singles competition on Sunday, June 5 (practice 10.30am, start 10am).

The first 32 at £8 will secure places. Ring Christine Dearden (01457 820030), Gayle (07989 124463) or the club (01457 872487) to book or for more details.
