Mossley to strengthen squad

NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL:

MOSSLEY boss Gareth McClelland believes changes will have to be made in the playing squad this summer if the Lilywhites are to progress in the Evo-Stik League Division One North.

After a promising start under Shaun Higgins, form took a dive and an eight-match winless run culminated in Higgins stepping down from his post in April.

Former Woodley Sports chief McClelland stepped in, initially on a caretaker basis, before being handed the job permanently. Mossley finished the season in 15th position.

“Eddy Haslam (assistant manager) and myself have identified areas in the squad which need to be strengthened, and we will endeavour to do just,” said McClelland.

“The lads responded well when we arrived and there was no lack of effort.

“One of the most obvious problems initially was the lack of stamina, particularly in the final stages of matches.

“That is something we can improve, but the priority this summer is strengthening the team and enjoying a good pre-season in order to set us up nicely for the competitive fixtures.”

McClelland believes youth team star Fabio Abreu can play a bigger part in the first team set-up next term.

Abreu (17), who has earned rave reviews for his England Schoolboys performances, scored with his first touch in the senior team during a 2-0 win over AFC Fylde.

McClelland added: “Fabio can feature more next season if he continues to progress at his current rate.

“He is such a talented lad.”
