Winterbottom Cup joy for ace Noreen

GOLF: NOREEN Nicholson won the first major of the season at Crompton and Royton when her two-round total of 194-50-144 clinched the Winterbottom Cup.
Val Hall (185-40-145) was runner-up, while first-day honours went to Jackie Banham (91-19-72) and the second-day prize to Pat Briggs (99-29-70).
OLDHAM, thanks to wins from Lynn Kershaw (3&1), Mary Buckley (4&3), Liz Johnson (5&3), Janet Kershaw (1up) and Linda Hall (2up), overcame host club Darwen 5-2 in the Bell Cup.
And they enjoyed a 6.5-2.5 victory against Davyhulme Park in the Lancashire Sheild.
Buckley (1up), Karen Phanco (match halved), Sheila Antrobus (3&1), Chrie Peirson (1up), Jane Antrobus (7&6), Anne Rotchell (5&4) and Edythe Turner (1up).
BLACKLEY recorded a fine 4-3 win against Manchester in the Bell Cup, while they swept aside Crompton and Royton 6-1 in the Silver Division.
