Irving defies conditions to win major
GOLF: RICK Irving braved heavy rain to shoot a net 65 and land the Cheetham Cup, a major at STAMFORD.
But he had to survive a three-way card play-off against runner-up George Sillars and third-placed Steve Finan.
The following day’s charity open attracted a full field, with players coming from as far afield as Leicester.
The winners were the host club’s Simon Flynn and Ashton’s Steve Flynn with 47 Stableford points, which included four twos.
Ken Lawton and Phil Bradwell (Stamford) were second with 45 points, while another host-club pair, Tony Smith and Mike Hewitt, were third with 42.
Stamford’s junior team won 5-2 at Fairfield 5-2, while the Dunham Forest tea, beat Hart Common 4-3, professional Mark Smith returning to the first hole and clinching victory for the team with a birdie.
