Heyside captain insists title still in reach
CRICKET: CAPTAIN Nick Campbell believes Heyside can force their way back into the Saddleworth and District Cricket League title mix.

The Little Hey Street outfit, one of the teams best-equipped to push for top honours, slipped to their third loss of the season at home to Droylsden.

This latest setback, Heyside slumped to 134 all out in reply to an imposing 263 for nine, followed defeats to Austerlands and Uppermill.

However, Campbell insists his side, who are 26 points adrift of Uppermill, are capable of making up the lost ground.

He said: “We got stuffed by Droylsden, and fair play to them, they played well.

“We had a chat after the game and we all made the point that our season is not over.

“It’s only five games old and if we can string six or seven wins together, we’ll be right up there.

“I suppose it’s doubly disappointing in the fact that Bamford Fieldhouse, the favourites for the title, started the season on minus 20 points, which has given other teams the chance to steal a march on them. They have also lost and drawn a game .”

With Heyside facing a trip to Bamford on Saturday — they play host to Stayley 24 hours later — Campbell has called on his players to maintain their concentration levels.

He added: “We’ve had this habit of switching off in the middle of games and it has cost us.

“Also we need to get better starts with the bat. We’ve been one wicket down, sometimes two, with 20 runs on the board, which then puts pressure on the other batsmen.”
