Griffiths plays starring role

Bowls: TONGE remain on course to retain the Manchester Premier League title after another convincing victory.
They swept aside Chorlton outfit Lloyds Hotel 11-3 (199-138) with wins from Matt Gillies (21-4), Andrew Cairns (21-10), Gary Ellis (21-10), Steve Squire (21-13), Stuart Mort (21-13), Colin Lane (21-17), Darren Griffiths (21-16) and Simon Couple (21-13).

Griffiths is the only unbeaten player in the Tonge team and is in line to land the league’s Last Man Standing trophy.

Tonge’s next game is at Stockport side Nursery Inn on Wednesday (7.30pm).



OLDHAM Evening Chronicle Handicap champion Garry Coverdale is in the Middleton team which will take on Fylde in a Federation Division Four match on Sunday (2pm).
Coverdale is in the away side at Hambleton BC along with North Chadderton Social and Bowling Club team-mates Donny Wilkinson and John Blezzard, and Springbank’s Ged Smedley.

The home team will play at North Chadderton and the team includes the host club’s Wilf McDermott and Llew Roberts, along with Springbank’s Steve Copeland and Jimmy Hynes.

OLDHAM’S Steve Mellor and M Fisher have reached the finals of the Brennan mixed pairs at Norden BC.
