Smith seals Shield glory at the death

FOOTBALL: HIGH Crompton earned a dramatic 4-3 extra-time victory over Royton FC in the D & J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Jack Abbott Premier Division Shield final.
With seconds left, Andy Smith headed home Paul Ashton’s cross to seal the triumph.
High Crompton took the lead through Ashton after 23 minutes, and he added a second just after the restart.
Wayne Dean pulled a goal back for Royton, and Gary Hall levelled matters.
Hall struck again, but with the last kick of normal time, goalkeeper David William fouled Ashton in the box, and the striker completed his hat-trick to send the tie into extra-time, before Smith’s winner.
Highfield United lifted the David Giblin Division One Shield after beating Rifle Range Royal Blues 5-3 on penalties.
The game finished 2-2 after extra-time.
Rifle were in front after eight minutes through Rick Massey. James Greely made it 1-1 after an hour.
Martin Gurr put Highfield ahead, only for Sam Leigh to level.
With no goals in extra-time it was on to the penalty shoot-out.
Defender Keith Kurpass scored the winning spot-kick after Highfield goalkeeper James Wilkinson saved James Greaves’ effort.
UPPERMILL enjoyed a 6-1 midweek victory over Moldgreen in the Huddersfield and District League Division One.
Kristian Ventress and Tommy Bunn both scored twice, with James Mooney and Andrew Cooney also netting.
It came hot on the heels of another 6-1 win, against Netherton, in which Ventress notched four goals. Also on target were Lee Rainford and Bunn.
