Buoyant Shaw look to follow up surprise win
CRICKET: FRESH from their defeat of Bamford Fieldhouse, Shaw look to stay on track at Stayley tomorrow in the Armstrongs Office Furniture Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
After a good start to the season — they opened up with two straight wins — Andy Young’s side were rocked by consecutive losses.
But they put a halt to the mini-slump by surprising reigning champions Bamford as the league’s ‘Weathertime System’ was used after rain interrupted play.
Shaw’s new professional/overseas amateur combination of Khurram Shehzad and Jawad Hameed Haq played their part in that deserved success.
Shehzad hit 68, while Haq claimed three wickets and scored a useful 32.
As well as scoring important runs, the pair have added depth to the bowling attack, easing the workload on Rick Harrington, John Sweeney and Young.
After Stayley, Shaw welcome another team in the bottom two, Friarmere, on Sunday.
Back to tomorrow’s action, leaders Uppermill face a local derby at home to a Saddleworth side lifted after recording a first win of the season against Hollinwood.
Droylsden, going great guns in second, play host to Austerlands who were thumped by Uppermill last weekend, while Glodwick return from their week off by hosting Greenfield at Warren Lane.
