Moment of truth for Waterhead

RUGBY: WATERHEAD will go all out to avoid having to seek re-election tomorrow when they take on Egremont Rangers in their final National Conference League Division two clash of the season (2.30pm kick-off).

Garry Highton's men need at least a point to stave off a bottom-two finish, which would mean the club having to go before the league's administration to plead its case for continuing in the competition.

Having not played for three weeks — the delay in finishing the season is due to Egremont clearing up their backdated fixtures after the raft of winter postponements — Highton is hopeful he will have a squad open to him which can give the Peach Road side's opponents a tough game.

Waterhead's last fixture came at Egremont and the 66-12 loss they suffered gives an indication as to the size of task the team faces.

"We would really like to avoid re-election, not only for the first team but also for the juniors and everyone connected with the club," said Highton, who is definitely without captain Kieran Grennan (broken hand), Michael Brown (knee ligaments), Paul Geener (shoulder) and Matthew Barran (broken thumb).

"A win would be fantastic for us, but we know it will be difficult.

"Hopefully we can get a big crowd to cheer us on."

Hope for Waterhead lies in the result gained against Egremont in the Carnegie Challenge Cup, a tie they agonisingly lost 28-24 in January.
