BOXING:
JOHN Newell was left devastated after controversially losing in the junior ABA final in Kent.
The 17-year-old Oldham fighter lost 27-20 to Archie Hutchings - a decision that stunned not only Newell's camp but also a number of punters at Medway Valley Leisure Park, who jeered officials.
While Newell admits nothing can be done to change the outcome, his coach Sean Rafferty will be going on record with his displeasure.
"I am absolutely distraught," said Newell.
"By the end of the second round I was seven points behind, when I should have been ahead, so I had to change my game plan and go for broke.
"When the final tally was announced no-one could believe it. Fans, other fighters, everyone was in a state of shock.
"I feel sick, but I will take it on the chin and I know for a fact I will come back stronger.
"I don't even want a break. In a few days I will be back in Shannon and Ancoats gym working hard.
"Next year I can come back to the ABAs in the seniors category to fight in open age.
“This experience has made me even more determined to succeed."
