Award delight for Morgan

RUGBY: GARETH Morgan was named the young player of the season at the Oldham Amateur Rugby League’s annual presentation night, staged at the White Hart, Lydgate.


The Saddleworth Rangers loose-forward, who is in the Great Britain youth squad to tour South Africa next month, received his award from Adrian Alexander, the former Oldham RL forward and Harlequins and England rugby union player.

The Bernard Flanagan sportsperson of the year was Paul Deakin, of Higginshaw, while Jimmy Leach, of Oldham St Anne’s, picked up the unsung hero prize.

Saints collected the Bill Webb Trophy for club of the year, which is chosen by Oldham Referees’ Society.

Lester Chattein, a member of the Oldham ARL committee, was the received the long service award.

Rochdale Cobras had a double cause for celebration.

The North-West Counties League outfit won the Rugby Oldham Challenge for season 2010-11 and in Jovilsi Quaniuci they boasted the man of steel.

Standard Cup man-of-the-match winners in each of the games were —

Andy Gorey (Hollinwood), David Sweeney (Higginshaw), Ryan Tetley (Rochdale Cobras), Sean Garrett (Waterhead), John Byram (Hollinwood), Paul Turner (Higginshaw), Hayden Jeans (Saddleworth Rangers), Ben Powell Trophy.




Higginshaw’s John Mellor was among six recipients of long service awards at the Kukri North-West Counties League dinner at Old Trafford cricket ground. Quaniuci was the Division Four player of the year.
