GOLF: CUP holders Crompton and Royton ‘A’ put their indifferent league form behind them to book a place in the quarter-finals of this year’s Oldham and District Golf League knock-out competition.
They beat Denton ‘B’ 4-1 at Fairfield with professional Martin Beaty among their winning pairs.
And the High Barn club have two representatives in the quarter-finals as their ‘B’ team claimed a 3.5-1.5 win over Saddleworth ‘B’ at Dukinfield.
It was a tight affair with two of the wins coming at the first extra hole — club captain Gordon Lamb and his vice-captain Paul Harrison recovering their composure, having squandered a three-hole lead with four holes to play.
Werneth will also have two sides in the last eight after their ‘A’ team saw off Stamford ‘B’ 4.5-0.5 at Brookdale and their ‘B’ team were given a walkover by Tunshill ‘B’ at Oldham after the new boys to the league were unable to field a team.
And, following a meeting at the club this week, Tunshill have resigned from the league.
The league executive is examining the possibility of a ‘C’ team from one of the existing clubs picking up the fixtures for the rest of the season.
