Pauline shocked by title repeat

Golf: WINNING the ladies’ Chronicle Cup once was a surprise — to do it twice in a row left Saddleworth golfer Pauline Richardson stunned.
Having won last year on her home course, she retained the trophy at Oldham to become only the second woman to keep the title.
She was following in the footsteps of Crompton and Royton’s Pauline Givvons (1975 and 1976).
Pauline produced a fine finish to her round with pars at both the tricky par three 16th and the par four 17th for a score of 95-30-65 and a one-shot winning margin.
“I had only played Oldham once before three years ago, but it kept coming back to me as we went around,” said the retired marketing manager, who lives in Grasscroft.
Pauline (60) was presented with the trophy by Chronicle Editor David Whaley, who praised the Oldham Ladies’ Golf Association for a fine tournament played on an exceptionally well turned-out Lees Road course.
He also paid tribute to Joan Hirst, president of OLGA, who died earlier this year.
The Centenary Trophy, presented to the club with the best four net scores, went to Oldham with efforts of 67, 68, 68, and 69 for a 272 total.
LILLIAN Howarth, with a net round of 72, won the EWGA medal three at Saddleworth, from Debra Cockburn (net 74).
And Lillian doubled up by winning the Coronation Foursomes alongside Sonia Dunn.
The pair recorded 33 points to emerge victorious on a card play-off from Julie Ward and Hazel Rogerson.
STEVE Oldham defends his Chronicle Cup title at Werneth on Saturday.
The Crompton and Royton member, who picked up last year’s crown at his home course, tees off at 10.40am.
