WERNETH repelled Royton in one of the John Willie Lees Twenty20 Competition's most astonishing matches.
Coppice paid man Hasnain Abbas smashed a brilliant, unbeaten 141 and overseas amateur Lewis Ashton 71 not out as Werneth raced to an amazing 250 for two off their 20 overs.
But for long periods of the Royton reply, the visitors appeared to be on track for the most unlikely of victories.
Deputy professional Roelof Hugo raced to a quickfire 66 and Rayn Carruthers 55, but Royton were finally dismissed for 223 — a great effort chasing such a daunting score.
Oldham skipper Chris McDonnell hit 47 in a winning total of 146 for six at Ashton. The hosts were restricted to 142 for six.
Crompton enjoyed a morale-boosting nine-wicket victory over Littleborough at Glebe Street.
Home professional Fida Hussain took three for seven as Boro were reduced to 94 for nine, and Danny Taylor finished the job with an excellent, undefeated 54 as Crompton sped to 95 for one.
