King Lee revels in Centenary Trophy joy

GOLF: LEE Conway braved a hailstorm and generally-unfavourable conditions to post a winning score in the Centenary Trophy, one of the majors at Crompton and Royton.







Lee, an eight handicapper, shot 72 for a net 64 and two-shot triumph over Tim O’Brien, whose 76-10-66 eared him second spot following a card play-off against Ryan O’Leary (76-10-66).







BRIAN Weems had a hole-in-one at the 14th hole on his way to a net 61 and victory in Oldham’s captain’s qualifier second round.



Results: 1, Brian Weems 76-15-61; 2, Mick Ganley 73-10-63; 3, Lee Blainey 71-6-65.



Captains qualifier first round: 1, Karl Handley 80-21-59; 2, Dave Kay 70-8-62; 3, Steve Hunt 75-13-62.







VICTORY tasted sweet for Ian Pontefract in the Veterans Trophy, a major competition at Brookdale.



He carded 77-11-66 to finish four shots clear of Trevor Mayo (77-7-70), who claimed runners-up spot on a card play-off from Lewis Marland (81-11-70).
