Werneth hold their nerve on last green

GOLF: WERNETH ‘A’ have opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Oldham Golf League’s ‘A’ East Division.
They did so by inflicting an 8-0 defeat on previous leaders Dukinfield — they lost by the same score the week before after starting with four straight wins.
But it could have been so different as three of the four games were decided on the final green at the Garden Suburb club.
Crompton and Royton jumped into second spot with a 7-1 win over Oldham.
Rick Sweet and Dave Hewitt came from two down with seven to play to win on the last green, while captain Gary Melling and Andy Allen fired seven birdies in 13 holes on the way to a six and five romp.
In the West Division, the top two clashed and North Manchester emerged victorious with an impressive 5-3 win at Denton.
It was a different story in the ‘B’ League West Division where, North Manchester failed to break clear at the top.
They were held 4-4 at home by chasing Denton and their lead stays at two points.
Wins for Blackley and Werneth — who meet tonight — have seen them pull clear in the East Division.
The ‘B’ League West Division tables have been amended after the league registered an incorrect score.
Crompton and Royton ‘B’ 5, Blackley ‘B’ 3 was actually a 4-4 draw.
