ATHLETICS:
ROYTON Road Runner Stuart Carroll earned an impressive eighth-place finish in the Freckleton Half-Marathon — the oldest event of its kind in the UK.
Carroll crossed the line after one hour, 19 minutes and 23 seconds.
His clubmates also put in good performances. Dave McBride finished in 1.23.38, followed by Ian Bishop (1.24.25). Colin Green produced a new personal best time of 1.26.42.
Carole Madden was Royton’s highest-placed female — she posted a time of 1.34.10.
Some excellent individual displays were made all the more impressive by the fact they had to contend with strong head winds and high temperatures throughout the event.
Heather leads way for Harriers
OLDHAM and Royton Harriers enjoyed a successful day in the National Young Athletes League.
In the under-17s category, Heather Moran won the 100 metre sprint in 13.3 seconds and the 200m in 27.2.
Tyler Williams claimed top spot in the hammer courtesy of a 21.34m throw and also clinched shot putt glory (5.92m).
Charlotte Bowker led the way in 80m hurdles, finishing in 14.2, and won the shot putt (5.68m).
Katie Frost’s 15.02m throw was enough to win the javelin.
Adam Howard led the field in 1,500m.
