Ireland clinches top spot

ANGLING:
MONARCH AC’s evening match on the club water saw Dave Ireland take top spot with a superb 30lb 4oz catch of skimmers, ide and chub, tempted by chopped worm and caster.
Organiser Dean Pickering followed with 21lb 10oz of carp, skimmers and roach, with third-placed Geoff Carr next on 14lb 6oz, which comprised skimmers and roach.
DAVE Machin won the Diggle AC contest on Tanners Dam thanks to two good-sized carp weighing 20lb 2oz. Runner-up Martin Taylor mustered 9lb 6oz of roach, while Mike Henshaw caught 8lb of skimmers and a small carp.
MEDLOCK Bridge AC’s open match was won by the ever-consistent Billy Brierley, who bagged a string of early chub adding up to 13lb 2oz.
Bob Harrison took 12lb 11oz of chub and skimmers, and Steve Clegg tempted chub and plenty of small roach in a 9lb 6oz net.
IT has been a busy old time at Todmorden AS, with four contests in a short space of time.
The first saw Dave Richmond lead the way with 37lb 12oz of bream that fell to pole and caster.
Second-placed Pete Fitton found bream weighing 23lb 8oz, while 23lb was enough to earn Paul Balmforth third spot.
In the second match, Steve Hall stole the show after catching carp and ide which weighed in at 16lb 14oz.
Pete Mottram’s 14lb 12oz of carp and ide earned him second position, while Tom Barlow and Fitton tied for third on 11lb 5oz.
Mottram won the third meeting courtesy of a 53lb 2oz net made up of carp.
In second, Tom Barlow took 31lb 2oz of stockie carp, pushing Rob McEndry’s 29lb 12oz into third.
The final showdown saw Dave Stewart walk away with the bragging rights — he netted seven bream and two carp which totalled 35lb 7oz.
Paul Cryer (18lb 3oz) and Alan Crook (17lb 4oz) followed.
I ENJOYED a brilliant session on Chadderton water Woodside Farm where, fishing and feeding corn, I had a bite every time.
The water is solid with fish but unlike commercial fisheries isn’t overly stocked.
The fish themselves are in superb condition and right from the start I was catching skimmers that ran to around the 12oz mark as well as roach nudging a pound and carp to five pounds.
Included in the catch was a crucian of a pound-and-a-half as well as half-a-dozen tench — the biggest a pound.
Set in a beautiful setting you feel that you are in the middle of the countryside and I have no doubt that this is down to the way that owner Ian Crowther runs the place with certain rules that perhaps other owners might take on board.
Over-25s only are allowed on the water.
The only baits allowed are maggot, caster, worm, bread, meat and corn. No groundbait is permitted. Anyone wishing to fish the water should pre-book on 07957 834396.
