REHAN RAFIQ... half-century and three wickets for Glodwick
CRICKET: GLODWICK broke their Tanner Cup duck in style by sweeping aside Saddleworth and District Cricket League pacesetters Uppermill at Leefields last night.
The Warren Lane outfit had never won a game in the knock-out competition in four years of trying, but they can now look forward to a semi-final tie at Heyside.
Glodwick, who received a bye in round one, were indebted to a gutsy seventh-wicket stand between professional Rehan Rafiq — the Pakistani all-rounder made 67 — and Asif Lohdi (16).
Resuming on 116 for six, the pair stood firm to help lift their side to a respectable 180 for nine. Adam Robinson took five for 43.
In reply, Uppermill slipped to 48 for seven before they were eventually dismissed for 105 in the 24th over. Imran Asghar claimed four for 39, including the key wicket of paid man and ex-Glodwick player Imran Aslam for eight.
Rafiq weighed in with three for five from three overs and Chris Longley also had a couple of victims to his name.
Next up for Glodwick is Heyside, who made a tricky task seem very easy after they defeated Hollinwood by nine wickets at Little Hey Street.
Aamir Afzal carried on where he left off for the visitors on Monday by taking his overnight score to an unbeaten 91 in a total of 235 for six — a great effort considering they were 22 for four.
But John Selby, with a superb 109 not out, and pro Roelof Hugo, who finished unbeaten on 80, steered Heyside into the last four.
The remaining two ties should be completed tonight, weather permitting.
Greenfield are favourites to progress against Friarmere, who are 62 for seven, needing 153 to win.
Saddleworth will resume on 97 for four with 17 overs remaining as they attempt to chase down Bamford Fieldhouse’s 180 all out at Well-i-Hole.
Danny Hesford is still there on 57, while captain Steven Howard has yet to get off the mark.
