Brookdale stake claim for play-offs

GOLF: BROOKDALE made a decisive move from the pack in the chase for a top-two play-off place in the ‘A’ League’s West Division.
With leaders North Manchester looking favourites for top spot after a 6-2 win at Fairfield, it was Brookdale who emerged as runners-up favourites after a 7-1 home win against fellow challengers Stamford.
That win pushed the Woodhouses team five points clear of the rest as Denton suffered a 7-1 defeat at bottom club Saddleworth to all but rule themselves out of the race with two games to go.
In the East Division, leaders Werneth could only manage a 5-3 home win over Ashton, but that was enough to stretch their lead to four points as Crompton and Royton slumped to a 5-3 home defeat at the hands of Blackley.
It is hard to see past Blackley and Werneth filling the two play-off places in the ‘B’ League East, with Werneth claiming a creditable 4-4 draw at Ashton to stay nine points clear of third.
This week sees the cup semi-finals. Tonight, Stamford ‘A’ and holders Crompton and Royton ‘A’ meet at Saddleworth, while Werneth ‘A’ and Saddleworth ‘A’ lock horns at High Barn Road tomorrow.
