Griffiths leads the way in Tonge win

BOWLS:

LEADERS Tonge boasted six winners in the 9-6 defeat of Railway in the Manchester Premier League.

Darren Griffiths led the way with a 21-7 victory, while Jimmy Derby triumphed 21-8.

The other winners were Andy Cairns (21-11), Stuart Mort (21-17), Gary Ellis (21-14) and Steve Squires (21-11).

Tonge, who are 20 points clear of St Joseph’s at the summit with 10 games to go, are away to third-placed Lower Hopton next Wednesday.



AN Inbev Winter Bowling League delegates meeting will be held at Chadderton Cot on Tuesday (8.30pm).

Main item on the agenda is the replacement of North Chadderton, who resigned from the league at the end of the last campaign.

ENTRIES are being accepted for the inaugural Delph men’s open singles competition sponsored by Harold Stock and Co. and the Old Bell Inn, Delph.

The winner will receive £200, runner-up £100, semi-finalists £50, quarter-finalists £25 and those beaten in the last 16 £10.

Entry fee is £6 — win two games to qualify for the last 16 — and up to four people travelling together will be kept apart in the first-round draw.

Heats will be held on Friday, September 2 (6.30pm), Saturday, September 3 (2pm), Friday, September 9 (6.30pm) and Saturday, September 10 (2pm). Finals will take place on Sunday, September 25 (2pm).

OLDHAM’S Steve Mellor and Barry Seville were beaten 21-20 by Darren and Tim Holt (Bamford) in the third round of the Thwaites men’s pairs at Norden BC on Sunday.

The heats will continue on Sunday at 5.30pm, along with qualifying rounds in the AC Ventilation Ltd women’s pairs.
