GOLF:
ALAN SQUIRES shot a course record-equalling 62 at Oldham and then declared: “I was disappointed.”
The 62-year-old matched his age with shots, which is a rare feat for golfers of any level.
But his round during Oldham’s Captain Final and Spoon left him deflated.
The reigning English seniors champion and four-times Lancashire title holder explained: “It should have been lower.
“In fact, I was thinking of 59 when I stood on the 17th tee having birdied 16.
“Two threes would have given me a 59, but I hit my drive on 17 behind some trees and took five.
“Then I missed an eight-foot put on 18 which would have given me a 61 and course record.
“It was disappointing because although I did sink some good putts during the round, it was a
perfect day for scoring.”
