RUNNING: ROYTON Trail Race enjoyed a record turnout, with 189 runners taking part in the fifth instalment of the popular annual competition.
And an all-time high 58 represented organisers Royton Road Runners, to the delight of club officials.
Ian Grime of Newham and Essex Beagles continued his domination of this event, which is a tough multi-terrain battles through Tandle Hill Country Park.
He won for the fourth successive year in a time of 29 minutes and 45 seconds.
Despite a long lay-off with injury, he was still comfortably ahead of second-placed Rossendale Harriers star Andy Buttery, who finished in 30:31.
Royton’s Ian McBride, also returning from a spell on the sidelines, produced a fine run to finish third (30:40).
Chris Newton, of Oldham and Royton Harriers, was seventh in 32:21.
Bev Jenkins did Salford Harriers proud by setting a new women’s course record — she crossed the line in 33:51.
The male and female team prizes were retained by last year’s victors — Middleton Harriers’ Mike Flatley, Mark Lowden and Paul Jibson led the way, as did Debbie Fiddling, Debbie Shaw and Kirsty White for Royton.
