BOWLS: GARY ELLIS’S golden summer on the bowling greens continued when he won the £360 top prize in the Prestwich BC Classic.

The Nimble Nook and Tonge star now leads Graeme Wilson – his big rival for the mantle of crown green bowling’s top-rated player – 8-5 in major competition wins this season.

Ellis beat another Nook and Tonge ace, Jimmy Derby, 21-12 in the Prestwich final.

Earlier, he had seen off Andy Cairns 21-8 in the quarter-finals and Francis Penlington 21-14 in the semis.

Derby reached the final with a 21-13 defeat of Liam Griffin and 21-18 verdict against Dave Jackson, while Chadderton teenager Jonathan Copeland was beaten 21-18 at the last-eight stage by Jackson.

PAUL Heap (Friezland) won the Chadderton League’s President’s Handicap when he beat Matt O’Neill (Springbank) 21-16 in the final.

COACHING sessions for junior bowlers are currently being held at Dunwood Park in Shaw.
Youngsters and – if they wish – their parents are invited to attend any time between 9.15 am and noon.

Bowls are provided for those wishing to take part in the scheme which was launched last year and proved a big success.
