CRICKET: HEYSIDE professional Roelof Hugo is in line for a surprise return in time for Saturday’s home clash with Moorside in the Armstrongs Office Furniture Saddleworth and District League.
Club officials had been planning for life without the South African for longer after he flew home almost a fortnight ago suffering from a stress-related illness brought on by family problems.
However, skipper Nick Campbell believes the wicketkeeper-batsman could be back on Thursday — and he might feature in the game at Little Hey Street.
All being well, Hugo is also likely to be involved in the Tanner Cup final against Bamford Fieldhouse on Sunday, August 14, the venue for which is to be decided this week by the toss of a coin.
Campbell said: “I think Hugo is planning to fly back here on Thursday. I have not spoken to him, but he told someone at the club that was his plan.
“Hopefully, it is a sign that he is feeling better. I couldn’t say for certain because obviously we have not spoken, but if he is ready to come back then it is great news for the club.
“He will give everyone a big boost and if he is available for the final that is fantastic.”
Campbell was full of praise for overseas amateur Bromwell Godea, who claimed five for 18 in the 112-run victory over Glodwick in the Tanner Cup semi-finals.
He added: “Glodwick just could not cope with Bromwell — he was on fire. He took out their first four batsmen and they only had 10 runs.
“Their pro, Rehan Rafiq, is a big-hitter but he was gone in no time thanks to Bromwell. It was a brilliant performance and we are delighted to be in the final.”
