GOLF: WERNETH’S Jack Suttie produced an incredible birdie blitz as his team booked their place in the Oldham Golf League ‘A’ team play-offs.
Suttie, who has reduced his handicap to plus-one, birdied the first SEVEN holes as he and team captain Mark Abbott ran riot against Crompton and Royton.
Abbott birdied the eighth and Suttie the ninth and the latter was eight under par stood on the tenth tee. The course record at Werneth is only a seven-under 61.
The pair eventually notched up 11 birdies in 12 holes to cut short the round and win 7 & 6.
Werneth eventually clinched a 6-2 win which gave them top spot in the East Division and home advantage against Brookdale in tonight’s semi-final.
The Woodhouses club got there courtesy of a hard-earned 5-3 success over Denton as they battled it out for second behind West Division winners North Manchester.
North now face reigning champions Dukinfield, who denied Ashton the second play-off spot with a 6-2 last-day win.
In ‘B’ League East, Werneth could not catch Blackley and had to settle for second.
They now go to Denton, who overtook North Manchester in the ‘B’ League West Division after winning 5-3 against Brookdale while the Middleton club were losing 6-2 at Stamford.
Play-off semi-final line-up:
‘A’ LEAGUE — Werneth v Brookdale, North Manchester v Dukinfield.
‘B’ LEAGUE — Blackley v North Manchester, Denton v Werneth.
