Lee retains title in style

GOLF: WERNETH vice-captain Lee Rowbotham retained the club championship with a four-shot victory.

The 25-year-old produced birdies at the second, third, fourth and fifth holes to take command early on and a first-round three-under-par 65 saw him lead by seven shots.

That allowed him the luxury of taking very few chances and a second-round 71 gave him a level-par 136 total — the same score he won with last year.

It was Lee’s third success in the scratch competition as he also won it as a teenager in 2002.

Lee still has some way to go to catch his father Paul, a seven-time winner of the title, and club stalwart Les Dooley, who has claimed an impressive 13 titles.

Lee’s father, Paul, did recover from a four-putt at a tricky third-green pin position to post 72-68 and claim the runner-up spot this time around.

And it was a good day for the Lees as 12-handicapper Lee Appleby claimed the nett prize with two rounds of 64.

The second included a hole-in-one with a four-iron at the 197-yard par-three sixth.
