SNOOKER:
MEMBERS of the St George’s Over-60s Club in Oldham are racking up the years.
The cuemasters, the youngest of which is 64-year-old George Owen (eight reds and eight blacks) and the oldest Harold Miller at 83 (10 reds, 10 blacks and the green), like nothing more than pottering about on the green baize.
And despite reaching the veteran stage of their careers, the stalwarts still retain a competitive edge.
With cues and pieces of chalk at the ready, the gentleman are getting ready for the new Oldham and District Snooker and Billiards League season.
The average age of the ‘A’ team is 74, while the ‘B’ side clock in at 76.
Bob Tait (79) said: “We all try to meet up on Mondays and Fridays for a knockabout.
“Everyone enjoys the craic of playing snooker and having a good chat with friends.
“That is what it is all about.”
They are no back markers, with the ‘A’ team clinching the runners-up spot in the league’s knock-out competition in 2009.
Chalking up the years are —
‘A’ TEAM: Bob Tait (79), Barry Crossley (74), George Owen (64), Keith Brannick (69), Harold Miller (83).
‘B’ TEAM: Frank Evans (74), Hughi Young (76), Ray Brown (74), George McDonald (79), Bernard Lewis (75).
