Brown sets sights on silverware haul

FOOTBALL: AVRO boss Phil Brown has set his sights on claiming top spot at the end of the new Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division campaign.
Despite finishing first last term, Avro were stripped of their crown after having three points deducted for inadvertently fielding suspended defender Matthew Edge.
Brown and his staff were unaware Edge had been sent off for Sunday League outfit Moston Villa. Manchester Gregorians became champions as a result.
But after watching his men beat neighbours Royton Town 4-1 and draw 3-3 at AFC Monton, Brown is enjoying a fresh start.
James Hampson (two), Andy Robinson and Patrick Garney netted in the derby clash, with Gary Chadderton, Lee O’Brien and Vinny Howells on target against Monton.
Brown said: “We have made a good start to the season. It was quite a comprehensive performance against Royton, and we were 3-1 up at Monton until a couple of slips in defence let them back in.
“All in all I am delighted with our progress and the aim remains the same as always — to win every competition in which we are involved.”
Midfielder Chadderton joined in the summer along with forward Abid Uddin and defenders Gary Ormes and Anthony Connor, while Howells has made the step up from the reserves.
“The new lads have done well and obviously it was nice for Vinny and Gary to get on the scoresheet so soon in the season,” added Brown.
“They have all brought something positive to the table.
“They can only benefit the squad and help in our bid to win the title.”
SIMPLY THE BEST . . . Megan Jackson was named North Manchester Girls’ League under-16s player of the season after a string of impressive displays for ROCS. She helped her side win the Knock-out Cup and secure second spot in the league.
