RUGBY: CARL Sneyd cracked over six goals as Waterhead triumphed 36-18 in their first home National Conference Interim League clash of the season against Castleford Lock Lane.
The Peach Road side wrested control of the game in the first half, establishing a big advantage before the sides switched ends.
Lock Lane took a fourth-minute lead through a Darren Holmes try and later added one through Tom Wood but in response, Waterhead ran home tries through Sean Garrett, Darren Nixon, Chris Charlesworth, Mick Diveney and Terry Fitzgerald to race in front, 30-8.
Wood and John Walton scored further tries for the visitors, Wayne Hardy adding a goal, but a Steve Kiss try eased the hosts home.
Carl Fields stood out but was unable to stop Oldham St Anne's, who had to make several changes due to holidays and work commitments, slipping to a 20-8 loss at West Bank Bears.
Danny Kay scored the visitors’ only try midway through the second half, while Kiel Lancashire kicked two goals.
Saints had trailed 6-2 at half-time, Craig Millington's try and a Steve Mellor goal giving new boys West Bank a slender advantage. But Dave Jones, Ryan Millington and Chris Wales tries, plus a Ryan Millington conversion, gave the home team the points in a feisty clash.
Kay’s try just before the hour mark, goaled by Lancashire, had brought Saints to within four points of the hosts, and they were unlucky when Jordan White had a touchdown under the posts ruled out.
Despite the result, Saints coach Chris Deakin said the experience gained by his young side would stand them in good stead for the future.
Saddleworth Rangers lost again, Milford Marlins coming away from Greenfield with a 23-12 win.
James Coates’ try and a conversion from Ryan Oxtoby took Milford 6-0 up by half-time.
Further tries by Anthony Hallinan, James Barker and Joe Ramsden before the hour, added to by two Oxtoby conversions and a Josh Parle field goal, saw Marlins surge into a 23-0 lead.
Saddleworth responded through a pair of late tries for Jack Brennan, Jack Bradbury goaling both.
