On-song Ellis is Classic gold hit

STEWART Bentley (right), pictured with Oldham Veterans League president Bill Connolly, lifted the President’s Cup thanks to a 21-8 success over Denis Hoyle. The North Chadderton player defeated Bob Nisbet (Nimble Nook) 21-19 in the last four, while Hoyle (Tonge) got the better of Wilf Flanagan (Stanley Road) 21-18.
BOWLS:
A WEEK after claiming his 100 and 101st open titles, Gary Ellis was standing tall at the top of the podium again.
He bagged the Mike Roach Memorial Classic at Woolston Royal British Legion, Warrington.
The Nimble Nook and Tonge ace defeated Callum Wraight 21-12 in the final to land his 12th success of the season.
HEATS are underway in the Delph Men’s Open.
Qualifiers so far are: Friday: D Griffiths (Nimble Nook), M Gillies (Nimble Nook), R Crowther (Huddersfield). Saturday: W Smyth (Audenshaw), S Leach (Rochdale), D Holt (Rochdale), D Hibbet (Ashton Cricket). There are still six places left for the qualifier on Saturday (2pm). TOP open handicap performer Andrew Cairns is running two end-of-season competitions at his home club, Gaghills BC, in Rossendale.
The open pairs competition has heats on Tuesday, September 27 and Thursday, September 29, and Tuesday and Thursday, October 4 and 6 (6.30pm). The finals will be held on Friday, October 7.
The winners will receive £300 and the last 16 are in the money.
