Uppermill’s derby delight
Date published: 09 September 2011
FOOTBALL: UPPERMILL earned derby bragging rights after beating Diggle 3-0 at Churchill Playing Fields in the Huddersfield and District League Division One.
Diggle, who forced four consecutive corners early on, could have taken the lead, but Joel Longmore cleared a stinging shot off the line.
This close call spurred on the visitors and after 25 minutes Andrew Cooney found Kristian Ventress, whose header was tipped around the post.
The breakthrough came three minutes later. Ross Stanley fed Ventress, whose deft lobbed dropped deliciously into the net.
Gareth Chew almost doubled the lead, only to see his powerful drive shake the crossbar.
The away team came out all guns blazing after the break at the instruction of boss Simon Tait, and Murray Hill, Andrew Pheby and Chew went close to scoring.
A flashpoint just after the hour mark saw both sides reduced to 10 men. Chew reacted angrily to a wild lunge from substitute Matley and the pair received their marching orders.
With 20 minutes left Uppermill increased their lead when Ventress headed in a wicked Cooney delivery.
And 10 minutes later it was 3-0, Bobby Greenwood converting Nick Fitzpatrick’s pinpoint pass.
Division Two action saw Heyside defeat Westend FC 7-2.
On the mark were Carl Winstanley (two), James Leonard (two), Leon Perry, James Taylor and Robert Flynn.
