Local stars meet their Waterloo

BOWLS:

ANDREW Buckley (Chadderton) and Lee Lawton (Failsworth), this area’s last hopes in the Waterloo Bowls Handicap in Blackpool, went out at the last-32 stage yesterday.


THE Failsworth League pairs finals will be held at Stanley Road Conservative Club on Sunday (start and strike-out noon).

Pairs involved are:

D Robinson and N Colley, G Tomkinson and B Raynor (Chadderton Cot); Paul Taylor and M Moore (King George); L Schofield and J Ashton (North Chadderton); Michael Hodson and A Hodson, G Woolley and W McDermott, D O’Brien and D Buckley (Springbank); A Bidwell and T Johnston (Star).



THERE is plenty of local interest in the finals of Norden BC’s Solar Choice men’s singles on Sunday (5pm).

ALAN Rushton (Crompton) defeated Charlie Roberts (Waterloo and Taunton) 21-15 to win the Saddleworth League’s Tweed Cup, sponsored by Cheeky Chimps Activity Centre, Lees.

Quarter-finals: C Roberts (Waterloo) 21, A Bidwell (Springbank) 13; B Kerr (Springhead) 3, J Blezzard (Waterloo) 21; A Rushton (Crompton) 21, J Dearden (Friezland) 14; W McDermott (Springbank) 16, P Roberts (Springhead) 21. Semi-finals: C Roberts 21, J Blezzard 16; A Rushton 21, P Roberts 12.

FRIEZLAND BC are drawing up plans for a new trophy cabinet after a season of success.

The ‘A’ team clinched top honours in Division Two of the Saddleworth League, with Geoff Ball, thanks to a stunning record of 16 wins out of 16, claiming the merit prize.

In the Chadderton League, Friezland ‘B’ emerged victorious in Division Five, and Friezland Weavers came on top in Division ‘C’ of the Failsworth League.

And the Greenfield club were also celebrating title joy in the Tameside Women’s League Division One.
