MARTIAL ARTS: TEENAGERS Amy and William Sutcliffe have both won medals at the World Martial Arts Games.

William (13) claimed gold medals in grappling and kick jutsu in Cardiff while sister Amy (14) won bronze in grappling.

Trainer Dave Terry, of DEMAA (Domana Elica Martial Arts Academy) in Werneth, said: “William was in a large category, with people from other countries, and he did really well to win two gold medals.

“Amy fought her heart out and deserved her medal.”

The talented siblings have been just as successful in other styles of martial arts, attaining their first dan junior black belts in ju-jitsu.

The pair took part in an intense two-hour grading session before being awarded their belts — after four years of working towards the honour.

Dave added: “They got their first dans a little sooner than usual as they were training three to four times a week, whereas most people only train twice.

“They have worked very hard for it and deserve it.”

Sessions include learning moves and technical practices, as well as maintaining physical fitness, especially in the build-up to competitions.

Amy and William, who attend Saddleworth School and Crompton House School respectively, are also trained in karate.

William has also taken up kick-boxing and is already at a good standard.

“They are real all-rounders,” Dave said. “They put a lot of time and commitment into it and are doing great.”
