Jonathan takes family honours

BOWLS: JONATHAN Copeland showed his father a thing or two about bowls on the way to winning the Solar Choice men’s singles at Norden BC.

The Chadderton teenager defeated his dad, fellow Greater Manchester player David, 21-12 in the quarter-finals, before seeing off Rochdale’s Peter Fielding 21-11 in the semis and James Grey 21-14 in the final.



NORTH Chadderton’s Lee Schofield and John Ashton won the Failsworth League pairs title with a 21-15 final verdict over Alan Bidwell and Terry Johnston (Star) at Stanley Road.

STEVE Mellor (Nimble Nook) won the Chadderton League’s Stan Boston Merit Trophy thanks to a 21-18 defeat of Wilf McDermott (Springbank).

Quarter-finals: D Robinson 21, E Worthington 19; M Flitcroft 17, Mellor 21; W McDermott 21, B Seville 14; D O’Brien 21, I Gorbutt 18. Semi-finals: Robinson 17, Mellor 21; McDermott 21, O’Brien 18.



HALIFAX star Robert Hitchen won the Tonge Classic and top prize of £500 with a 21-18 final defeat of Chris Jenkins (Macclesfield). Failsworth’s Lee Lawton lost 21-15 in the semi-finals to Hitchen, while Jenkins beat Peter Consterdine (Bolton) 21-20.



HEATS in the Blesma Trophy will be held at Tonge BC on Thursday and Friday (7pm).

ENTRIES are being accepted for next month’s floodlit invitation handicap at Lees and Hey Conservative Club.

The qualifiers take place on October 5 and 6, with the finals on October 7.

A first prize of £200 is up for grabs, with the losing finalist receiving £100. The beaten semi-finalists get £50 and the four who exit in the quarters £25. Entry is £10 each, with a maximum field of 32.
