Wright back ‘home’ as pro

CRICKET: SIMON Wright is returning “home” to Crompton.

The all-rounder, who has spent the last two seasons with Bamford Fieldhouse in the Armstrong Office Furniture Saddleworth and District Cricket League, will play as professional for the club he represented as a youngster and led as captain for several seasons.

Joining him at Glebe Street will be another Bamford player, batsman Dave Roberts, who scored 628 runs in the Saddleworth League this summer.

Both were in the Bamford team which won this season’s Tanner Cup and the 2010 league title.

The signings of Wright and former Uppermill player Roberts were confirmed by Crompton skipper Carl Taylor, who said there were other new players in the pipeline.

These include an overseas amateur from the West Indies.

Former Crompton professional Darren Sammy, the current West Indies captain and over here this week for two T20 internationals against England, has been instrumental in identifying a young player to join the club.

He will be a top-order batsman and spin bowler.

Another possible for Crompton is a 6ft 6in Australian fast bowler who holds a UK passport.

Taylor, whose team finished second from bottom of the Lake Garage CLL this season, said: “We wanted to move things along early with a view to next season and these signings do that.

“Hopefully, there will be more on the way in the next few weeks.”
