Last-gasp sickener

FOOTBALL: UPPERMILL blew the chance to go clear at the top of the Huddersfield and District League Division One table after a 3-2 home reverse at the hands of Hepworth United.

Both sides went into the game having won the opening four matches of the campaign.

Early exchanges were pretty even, but the visitors drew first blood after 22 minutes when Andrew Pheby accidentally handled in the box and the resultant penalty was converted.

Uppermill responded well and their pressure paid off one minute before the break. Pheby fed Kristian Ventress out wide, and the forward cut inside two defenders before curling home the equaliser.

Uppermill took the lead through Gareth Chew’s left-foot drive just after the hour mark.

But Simon Tait’s side conceded twice in the last five minutes, the first a counter-attack and the second a neat finish after hesitation in the home defence.

There was still time for Moores to be thwarted in the dying seconds as Uppermill searched for a leveller.

In Division Two, Heyside came from behind to win 4-1 at Honley.

Leon Perry struck twice and was joined on the scoresheet by James Taylor and James Leonard.

Reserves Division Two action saw Heyside ease to a 6-1 home victory over Wooldale.

Steven Partington helped himself to a hat-trick, Matthew Nokes claimed a brace and Ashley Blakeman also got in on the act.



AFC OLDHAM won 4-1 at Rochdalians in the Lancashire and Cheshire League Premier Division.


SPRINGHEAD Ladies players have been thrown a lifeline after the club decided to pack up due to a shortage of players.
Curzon Ashton Ladies coach and Austerlands resident Glyn Jones was determined to help out and has accommodated every member of the squad. Curzon have two teams — one in the Greater Manchester Womens’ League and another in the Midland Women's Combination League.

Curzon Ladies president Sheila Crompton said: "We were delighted to offer the Springhead girls a new home. “They are a super group and already fitting in well with our existing squad. We hope they will be happy with us."



SPRINGHEAD ground out a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over newly-promoted Monton in the Richard Bennett and Mark Hopwood were both thwarted by the goalkeeper early on, but the two combined after 25 minutes when striker Bennett converted his team-mate’s delivery.
Springhead put themselves firmly in the driving seat on the hour mark when Hopwood capitalised on a defensive error and slotted home the ball.

Colin O’Neil then hit the woodwork for the hosts and saw another effort cleared off the line.

With a quarter-of-an-hour remaining Monton gave themselves a lifeline when they pulled back a goal, but Springhead held firm.

Elsewhere, Avro lost 3-2 at reigning champions Manchester Gregorians, while Royton Town endured a 3-1 home reverse at the hands of East Manchester.
