SADDLEWORTH produced a storming second-day comeback to claim the Oldham and District Captains Challenge Trophy, played for at Belton Woods, Grantham.

Captain John Knight's team of vice-captain Tim Edwards, past captain Nigel Cooper and guest Nick Edwards were a lowly fourth after day one on the tough Lakes course, with Oldham holding a one-shot lead over Werneth.

But the Edwards brothers produced a birdie blitz for 46 points to claim second-day glory on the Woodside course and with Knight and Cooper runners-up with 40, Saddleworth stormed to a five-point team win.

The first-day prizes went to Oldham captain and vice-captain Martin and Barry Lewis (41 points), ahead of the Werneth pair of past captain Derek Ashford and vice-captain elect James Buckley (40).

A simultaneous society event saw former Crompton and Royton captain John Truelove in great form with a double success.

He partnered Werneth's David Whaley (41 points) to success on the Woodside course before joining Jim Garside (Brookdale) for 38 points on the Lakes course.

Runners-up on day one were John Barlow (Werneth) and Paul Cain (Brookdale) with 38 points, while on day two Dave Pullen (Saddleworth) and Steve Mills (Crompton and Royton) missed out on a card play-off with 38 points.

WERNETH’S mixed foursomes team will bid for Archie Preston Trophy glory at the weekend.

Having beaten Denton 4-3 in the semi-finals, Werneth take on Turton in the final of the Manchester and District Golf Alliance knock-out competition at Disley Golf Club on Sunday.
