BOXING:
RONNIE Heffron will take on Chris Johnson for the Central Area welterweight title later this month — if he comes through another bout unscathed.
The 20-year-old from Oldham, who trains at Anthony Farnell’s Failsworth gym, faces a yet-to-be-decided opponent in a six-rounder at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Saturday, October 15.
If that goes smoothly he will battle it out with southpaw Johnson, of Bolton, on October 28 at Bowlers near the Trafford Centre.
Johnson (29) has won 14 fights and lost three since turning professional.
The showdown is chief support to Frankie Gavin’s defence of his WBO Intercontinental title against Frank Horoche.
Farnell said: “Assuming Ronnie makes it through the Liverpool fight without any problems, it will be great to see him go for a title on October 28.
“Obviously I am talking form a slightly biased point of view, but Ronnie is in tremendous shape and cannot wait to take on Johnson.
“He is not fazed by the prospect of going into the ring twice in the space of a couple of weeks.
“These are exciting times for a fighter on the up. I am sure he will receive plenty of support at Bowlers, and there are still tickets available.”
