GOLF: BROOKDALE pulled off a major surprise when they claimed the Brian Atack team trophy at the Oldham and District Golf League’s end-of-season tournament, held at North Manchester.
The host club are normally hot favourites for the title with the best three four-ball Stableford cards counting towards the team prize, but Brookdale stormed to victory by a five-point margin.
They notched up a 131 total thanks to scores of 46, 45 and 40 with North Manchester (43+42+40=125) second and Crompton and Royton (41+40+37=118) third.
Brookdale picked up two of the four day prizes with Gary Whittaker and Matthew Heap winners with 46, and ‘B’ team captain Joe Loughman and Trevor Horton third on 45.
They were split by Werneth ‘A’ team captain Mark Abbott and partner Michael Farrimond, who birdied the last for 45 points to nick second place on countback.
Fourth were home players Alan Burton and Mike Royle (43pts).
The event also doubled up as the league’s annual presentation with Dukinfield landing a double by winning the fairplay awards in the West Division’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ sections.
The East ‘A’ section fairplay award went to Stamford ‘A’, while Werneth ‘C’ picked up the ‘B’ section award after coming into the league at short notice to fulfil fixtures after Tunshill dropped out.
JOHN Truelove was a major winner at Crompton and Royton when he landed the Veterans Trophy.
He shot 86-18-68 to edge out Tim O’Brien (79-10-68) to make it three wins in a week after a double success with the Oldham and District Captains at Belton Woods, Grantham.
