Werneth lift trophy in dramatic finale

GOLF: WERNETH Golf Club are celebrating after lifting the coveted Archie Preston Trophy.
They were dramatic 4-3 winners over Turton at Disley in the final of the Manchester Alliance Mixed Foursomes knock-out which attracted an entry of 87 clubs.
Werneth claimed early victories through vice-captain Lee Rowbotham and his mother Gail (4 and 3), and Lee’s father Paul Rowbotham and Madge Griffiths (two holes).
And when captain Quentin Cartwright and lady vice-captain Fiona Dooley secured a third point at the third extra hole, Werneth were within touching distance of the trophy as the captain faced a dash to nearby Manchester Airport to catch a holiday flight.
But when John Yemm and Sheila Waterhouse — winners so many times in these matches over the years — lost on the last green, Pete and Marilyn Griffin went down 3 and 2 and Jack Suttie and Patricia Grant lost on the 19th, the tie was back on a knife edge.
And it was at the 20th hole — the third game of the seven to go to extra-time — where Adam Rowbotham and Glynis Jones secured the decisive point watched by their anxious and then elated team and supporters.
Werneth will host the 2012 final of the competition.
