Edwards shines in derby win

FOOTBALL:
AVRO earned a 4-1 win at neighbours Springhead in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division.
But the hosts can consider themselves unlucky to have come up against Jake Edwards — the goalkeeper was in superb form and beat away a number of attempts on goal.
In the first half he thwarted Mark Hopwood and Richard Bennett before Avro took the lead after 25 minutes, Callum Jackson nodding past Lee Milner.
After the break Bennett and Hopwood were again denied by Edwards, and Bennett also fired over when he should have at least hit the target.
Springhead were punished for wasting their opportunities when James Hampson doubled the lead for Phil Brown’s side just after the hour mark with a neat finish.
Rick Massey gave the home outfit hope when he headed in Dale Jackman’s free-kick.
But two breakaway goals in the last five minutes from Paddy Garmory and Craig Robinson sealed the victory for the visitors.
Springhead boss Lee McAllister said: “It was a cruel result, not what the performance merited.
“But the players can learn from Avro’s clinical finishing when presented with opportunities.”
Avro sit in second position in the table, one point behind leaders Hindsford, while Springhead drop down to ninth spot.
Elsewhere seventh-placed Royton Town slipped to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Old Alts.
In Division One, Hollinwood lost 8-5 at Wythenshawe.
Fred Hardicre’s inconsistent side will feel annoyed at not at least gaining a point, having smashed home five goals in an away match.
