FOOTBALL:
OLDHAM Boro exited the FA Vase in the first round after a 3-1 reverse at home to Padiham, in a game which will be remembered for a 20-minute stoppage due to a fire.
Just before the interval youths are believed to have started a blaze using tyres behind one of the goals. A fire engine arrived to extinguish the flames.
Stuart Telfer opened the scoring for the visitors after 11 minutes and, after the match got under way
following the fire, Andy Howarth struck on the stroke of half-time to put them firmly in the driving seat.
In-form striker Mark Coyne gave Boro hope with a goal just after the restart, but Redmond Parker received a straight red card for a late tackle and it became an uphill struggle for the hosts.
Damien Morrison made sure of the win for the away team when he netted after 73 minutes.
Boro boss Tony Mills said: “There is no shame in losing to a side from the next division up and we did well, but it was always going to be tough once we went down to 10 men.
“The fire did not help because there was a lot of waiting and then we switched off as soon as the game started again.
“We did well and there was not much in it but it was a tall order towards the end.”
MOSSLEY suffered a 2-0 defeat at Lancaster City in the Evo-Stik League Division One North.
Centre-half Danny Gregson notched the first goal of the game with nine minutes on the clock, and just five minutes later strike Danny Hattersley doubled the advantage.
The Lilywhites threw on second-half substitutes Alex Byrne, Lee Constantine and Cameron Darkwah, but they could not reduce the deficit.
CHADDERTON had no game.
