High Crompton resign from league

HIGH Crompton CC have resigned from the D & J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League after almost 18 years.

Stuart Lomas’ top-flight side failed to raise a team for the first time in their history for the game against Limeside King George at the end of October.

High Crompton CC won the Challenge Cup in 2005 and the Jack Abbott Premier Division in 2006 and 2007.

"There may be an opportunity to re-form the club at some stage, but my feelings are that players want to play more on Saturdays,” said Lomas (pictured).

"Sunday football has become very much second fiddle."

Meanwhile, Lomas has taken a parting shot at the league committee following the decision by a number of referees to boycott fixtures over fears for their safety.

He added: “The league really do need to get their act together if they are to progress and teams need to know where they stand regarding the referees.

"I have been involved with the league since 1977 and I think they are now at their lowest ebb."

League president Rodney Clarke refuted that suggestion and responded: "As far as I am concerned the league is in a healthy state.

"You only have to look at the membership of the league to see that.

"As for the refereeing situation, that was explained clearly at a recent league meeting."
